Stop trying to figure it out, it’s impossible.
If you try week after week to conquer your to-do list and often fall short, that’s a sign. Actually, its a direct indication that you just can’t do it. By no means does this mean you’re a failure, it means there’s too much stuff on the list.
With all this technology and TV shows portraying perfectly efficient human its easy to feel like a failure. Not to mention that the computer has a better handwriting than me, so what???
You Are Not A Machine. You Are A Human.
And if you overwork yourself you will break down. If you continue to lengthen your to-do list you will malfunction. But this is worse than a machine break, because you cannot be replaced and no one can fix you, but you. Which takes time.
We do a lot of stuff. Stuff like work, commute, cook, clean and socialize. Then there’s also homework, practice and personal business. With 168 hours a week it seems like we can get it all done, but SEEM is a long way from ACTUAL.
First thing you have to do is get a pair of scissors and cut the list. Get an eraser and remove some stuff. Will someone die if you don’t wash dishes today? Will your child be unsuccessful if he doesn’t attend practice today? Ease up your to-do list because you’re a human and that’s a good thing.
Secondly, put your work off on someone else. That doesn’t mean being a slob. It means that you don’t have to be an expert or responsible for every task you have assigned. Kids can wash dishes. A landscaper can cut the grass. Be the manager in your life and delegate some of those items.
Thirdly, don’t skip the fun stuff. If you’re not already finding a way to enjoy yourself each week, go ahead and schedule it in. YES, ADD IT TO YOUR TO-DO LIST. Watch a movie, read a book, bird watch at the park. It’s guaranteed that taking breaks makes you more productive. It will help you get things done.
Lastly, give yourself a break. It’s impossible to be perfect. One week, you will kill it at work… and your home will be a mess. One week, your kids will be perfect angels and in turn treat you like royalty… and your boss will think you’re incompetent. When it happens, celebrate the good side and be patient with yourself. Eh… I’ll kill it next week.
Your sanity is one of the most important things you will ever have. It’s much more important than a to-do list. Don’t breeze through life being an efficient machine. Be a human, stop and smell the roses, and step over the BS.
