I have a to do list that never ends. No… really… it doesn’t. It grows more and more each day which encourages me not to take a day off, but with a to-do list like that, of course I get burned out. What happens when I get burned out? Absolutely nothing. I may sleep or stare at the wall for four hours, but I’m surely not doing anything.
So, how does one get out of this funk? Find your motivation.
Get positive. Yes, it’s easy to say and recall hard to do, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Grab a pen and paper, then start by making lists.
- Make a list of the things that excite you. The list can be as long as you want and then longer. No matter how far out of list the items on the list get, keep them coming. This is much more exciting than a to-do list.
- Make a list of the things that relax you. Again, try to out-do your to do list.
- Make a list of the things that make you laugh. This can be as simple as hanging around kids or watching comedy, but keep the list going.
- Then make a list of things that make you responsible. Being responsible is not necessarily fun, but in the end it makes you feel good. Some call it your “why”, but either way the end result typically justifies your means.
Finally, when you’re in a rut, feel absolutely bummed and you can’t find your get up and go… refer to your list. Read the list, add to the list, do the things on the list, or make plans to do the things on the list, but get to that list because your list will fulfill your motivation.
